Ubisoft and SEGA Embrace Web3 Gaming: Unveiling Upcoming Blockchain Titles

Gaming giants Ubisoft and SEGA reportedly invest heavily in blockchain gaming with original titles Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles and Battle of Three Kingdoms.

The companies will build their titles on the Oasys blockchain.

Ubisoft and SEGA Blockchain Games Depend on Oasys

According to Ubisoft’s official website, it may first airdrop free tokens necessary for participation. A teaser trailer for the game suggests an aesthetic similar to tabletop games.

The company has also released Rabbid characters in Sandbox and offered collectibles akin to Sorare‘s card-based fantasy football name.

Launched in February 2022, Oasys is an EVM-compatible, proof-of-stake, zero-gas-fee blockchain. Its founding team includes executives from top gaming companies, including Bandi Namco Research and PlayStation.

Using the Oasys network, Japanese game maker SEGA will bring Web2 hit Sangokushi Taisen to Web3. Blockchain gaming experts Double Jump Tokyo will develop the PC-based trading card game Battle of Three Kingdoms. Previously, SEGA released an NFT collection on Oasys.

Could Oasys and Ubisoft Revive Interest Through Better Gameplay?

Web3 games offer players a chance to own and exchange in-game assets. There are over three billion gamers globally. According to some estimates, gaming is bigger than the music and film industries combined.

Early attempts at blockchain gaming have arguably struggled to create compelling gameplay. Instead, developers focused on the game’s in-game blockchain economy, sometimes at the expense of poor visuals or paltry stories.

Arguably, this was because the games were developed by companies with skills in the crypto rather than the gaming space.

On the other hand, Ubisoft, the creators of mega-franchises Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, is the first AAA studio to invest significantly in Web3-based gaming.

In addition to bringing Web3 economics to a title gamers want to play, Grimoria could reignite flagging interest in the NFT space.

Before its pivot to artificial intelligence, Facebook parent Meta wanted to attract more users to its Horizon Worlds metaverse experience through virtual environments.

The company’s metaverse ambitions suffered from cumbersome hardware requirements and a lack of mainstream buy-in
