S&P Global OpenZeppelin acquisition adds security expertise from 900+ engagements

OpenZeppelin says clients will continue receiving security audits, secure development services and ecosystem programs from the same team, using the existing brand. Founded in 2015, the business provides blockchain security assessments alongside its developer tools.

Risk assessments reach the technology beneath onchain assets

S&P Global says the acquisition adds technical capabilities for evaluating blockchain-based financial products and supports the development of security assessments and benchmarks. The companies said combining technical expertise with S&P Global’s institutional reach would help traditional finance firms and decentralized finance businesses manage onchain risks.

OpenZeppelin’s security team has completed more than 900 engagements and identified over 10,000 vulnerabilities before production. The company says its contracts underpin more than $38 trillion in transferred value across digital asset markets, including major stablecoins and tokenized funds.

Open-source Contracts retain their license and public access

OpenZeppelin says its Contracts libraries and other open-source tools will stay free, with public maintenance on GitHub. The Contracts repository uses an MIT license.

The libraries provide reusable code for common token standards and access controls. In its September announcement, OpenZeppelin also committed to keeping future Contracts versions open source, extending that pledge to its other open-source applications and tools.

Financial impact and transaction advisers

S&P Global expects no material effect on its financial results from the acquisition of OpenZeppelin. The transaction’s financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal was initially announced on September 17, 2026, subject to closing conditions. Jefferies LLC acted as S&P Global’s financial adviser, while Clifford Chance provided legal counsel. FT Partners advised OpenZeppelin, and Cooley served as its legal adviser.
