Hacker Uses The Official Coinbase.com Domain To Target Coinbase Customers

A few Coinbase users reported that a hacker used the Coinbase domain officially to easily drag innocent Coinbase customers under his scam trap.

Coinbase is a US-based highly secured platform. The services of this exchange are available globally. In the US, the majority of the big players use Coinbase as a top choice to invest in cryptocurrencies. At present, Coinbase is under a legal hurdle because of a suit, initiated by the United States Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) in the last month.

In the last week, many crypto Twitter users reported that they received phishing/suspicious emails & text messages from the Coinbase exchange, indeed by an unknown hacker.

On 7 July 2023, A Coinbase customer Daniel Mason shared an incident that he faced. Mason noted that hacker(s) used the Coinbase.com domain name to trigger suspicious emails.

🆔 I founded an identity / security company.
🔐 I’m currently building an auth company.
😱 But my Coinbase account *almost* got phished.

This is the (2nd) most legit fraud attack I’ve ever experienced personally. Wild story below. 🧵 👇

Another Crypto Twitter user Jacob Canfield shared a similar kind of story and warned all the Coinbase customers.

Holy shit.

I just got attacked with one of the most complex scams in #crypto that I have seen to date.

Please read if you use @coinbase.

This just happened 15 minutes ago.

THIS IS A WARNING FOR ALL COINBASE USERS!

There has been some sort of a data breach.

It is worth it to note that the hacker was able to send the emails to the Coinbase customers via help@coinbase.com & this is Coinbase’s official contact email, so it was not easy for these people to detect any suspicious activity.

Crypto detective ZachXBT reported that a similar kind of suspicious activity came to light in the last year, where the hacker was using some kind of social engineering to trick the Coinbase customers easily. In that attack, the hacker successfully drained 14 Bitcoins from the victim’s account.

These types of incidents are clearly showing that people need to go through new crypto wallet storage services like self-custody wallets e.g. Trust wallet, Mycelium, Bitcoin core, etc.
