Bitcoin Mining Hits a Crossroads as Difficulty Hovers Near the Floor

Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin logged ten difficulty drops versus seven increases in 2026, leaving difficulty at 125.81 trillion.
  • Bitcoin difficulty sits just 0.7% above its 2026 low as roughly 150 EH/s remains sidelined.
  • Bitcoin’s next adjustment will test whether its 38.8% price gap from the October 2025 ATH keeps narrowing.

Bitcoin Miners Keep Losing Ground

Bitcoin mining is now 1.31% easier than it was the day before, and the full-year scorecard shows miners have spent more time losing ground than gaining it. From the first adjustment of 2026 through the latest at block 963648, Bitcoin has recorded ten downward difficulty adjustments against just seven increases.

Bitcoin’s last two difficulty adjustments logged by mempool.space.

More importantly, the losses have repeatedly dwarfed the rebounds that followed. Difficulty entered 2026 near 148.25 trillion before the Jan. 8 adjustment and now sits at 125.81 trillion, leaving Bitcoin’s mining difficulty roughly 15.1% below the level immediately before the year’s first adjustment. The real tell is where Bitcoin’s difficulty landed after all that whiplash.

Nearly Every Difficulty Comeback Has Been Erased

Difficulty cratered to 124.93 trillion on June 13, the lowest reading in 2026. It clawed back to 133.87 trillion, fell to 127.17 trillion, slipped again to 126.23 trillion, bounced to 127.48 trillion and has now retreated to 125.81 trillion. That leaves today’s difficulty barely 0.7% above the 2026 low. Put differently, almost every meaningful comeback miners managed since June has been wiped off the board.

Roughly 150 EH/s of Mining Power Disappears

The latest difficulty adjustment is especially telling because it followed a razor-thin 0.99% increase at block 961632. Instead of igniting another recovery cycle, that small gain was immediately wiped out by the 1.31% decline at block 963648. Hashrate is already well off its all-time high, and the difficulty data points to roughly 150 exahash per second (EH/s) of effective mining power disappearing from the network.

Still, conditions have started improving, but only recently. Bitcoin spent much of 2026 grinding through a bearish downtrend, with BTC falling more than 50% below its all-time high (ATH) above $126,000 set 11 months ago in October 2025.

Today, that gap has narrowed to 38.8%, giving battered mining economics some breathing room. The rebound has lifted mining revenue, or hashprice, and fatter margins mean more hashpower can afford to rejoin the fight. Miners also have an easier difficulty rating working in their favor, sitting just 0.7% above the 2026 low.

Miners Face Their Next Big Test

The string of false starts says this rebound still looks more like a reprieve than a reversal. Roughly 150 EH/s of sidelined hashpower could come roaring back if bitcoin holds its gains, quickly wiping out the difficulty discount miners are enjoying. Yet with BTC still 39% below its ATH, it leaves margins vulnerable.

The next adjustment is where the rubber meets the road. If price stalls, the floor could crack again; if bitcoin’s price keeps climbing, the recovery gets fuel. For now, another shakeout and choppy consolidation look more likely before mining finds anything resembling sustainable stability.
