Cosmos soars 11% as shorts suffer – More ATOM gains ahead IF…

Cosmos [ATOM] rose 11% over the past day despite broader market weakness. The rally coincided with stronger capital inflows and improving market sentiment.

CoinMarketCap’s Sentiment indicator reached 4.0. The metric used a scale between -10 and 10 to measure market consensus. A positive score suggested that bullish views outweighed bearish opinions among participating users.

ATOM’s Mindshare also rose 13%, generating over 3,100 related posts during the past 24 hours.

Growing Mindshare could attract more traders and support momentum. However, social attention alone cannot guarantee continued gains.

Why did ATOM shorts lose $1.28M?

The rally appeared driven largely by sentiment and leveraged positioning, with limited fundamental catalysts in evidence. Open Interest surged 14% to $121.02 million at press time.

Rising Open Interest showed that more leveraged capital entered ATOM’s derivatives market. However, Open Interest alone did not reveal whether traders favored long or short positions.

Even so, Liquidations showed that the rally caught bearish traders off guard.

Short traders lost approximately $1.28 million during the past day. By contrast, long traders lost only $14,300. This imbalance showed that ATOM’s rally forced significantly more short positions to close.

However, another derivatives metric suggested that bearish traders had not disappeared.

Could negative Funding Rates weaken ATOM?

Sentiment may support prices temporarily, especially when other indicators present conflicting signals. ATOM’s Funding Rate fell into negative territory, reaching -0.0158% on the 14th of August.

A negative Funding Rate meant short traders paid long traders. This reflected stronger demand for bearish perpetual exposure. However, it did not prove that the market contained more short positions than long positions.

On top of that, Spot Netflow remained positive for two consecutive days.

Approximately $1.14 million in net Cosmos [ATOM] entered exchanges, indicating that deposits exceeded withdrawals. Positive Spot Netflow could raise selling pressure if holders deposited their ATOM to take profits.

Together, negative Funding Rates and exchange inflows created risks for the rally.

Without stronger Spot demand, ATOM could surrender some gains. However, continued price strength may trigger further short Liquidations.

Final Summary

  • Cosmos [ATOM] gained 11% as Sentiment and Mindshare improved.
  • ATOM Open Interest rose 14% to $121.02 million. Short Liquidations reached $1.28 million, compared with only $14,300 for longs.
