TL;DR

  • As of Jan 29, 2024, Google will allow ads from “advertisers offering Cryptocurrency Coin Trust targeting the United States.”

  • Translation: anyone running a spot Bitcoin ETF will be able to advertise their fund via Google Ads (something the platform has not allowed in the past).

  • By allowing fund managers to advertise their BTC ETF’s via its ad platform, Google will be able to capture a chunk of the total value orbiting the Bitcoin ecosystem. Smart!

You know the “If I won the lottery” meme? ☝️

Yeah, well – a similar rule applies to a spot Bitcoin Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) being approved in the US.

(ICYMI: a spot BTC ETF would allow Bitcoin to be bought/sold via the stock market and attract a whole new kind of institutional investment).

We’re not sure if one is going to get approved in January 2024, like everyone in the industry is guessing it will…

But there will be signs.

One of which we have for you today – and it comes hidden in a Google ads policy update.

Up-bup-bup! Don’t scroll away.

We’re not about to make you read Google’s terms of service. We’ve found the extract for you. As of Jan 29, 2024, Google will allow ads from “advertisers offering Cryptocurrency Coin Trust targeting the United States.”

Translation: anyone running a spot Bitcoin ETF will be able to advertise their fund via Google Ads (something the platform has not allowed in the past).

What does Google know that we don’t?

No idea! A lot of things, probably.

Either way, one thing is for sure though: this is all a game of ‘value capture.’

There’s close to $1 trillion of value locked up in Bitcoin, and billions of dollars invested each year in Bitcoin related products and funds.

By allowing fund managers to advertise their BTC ETF’s via its ad platform, Google will be able to capture a chunk of the total value orbiting the Bitcoin ecosystem.

It’s something Facebook/Instagram still won’t allow, so Google will get a head start on attracting these deep-pocketed advertisers.

Smart!
