Ethereum Welcomes Open USD Stablecoin Launch Backed by BlackRock, Visa and 140+ Firms

  • Institutional alliance: The project brings together more than 140 companies from the financial and technology sectors, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, BNY, and Coinbase.
  • Operating model: Open USD enables fee-free, unlimited volume issuance and redemption for participating companies.
  • Deployment network: The stablecoin will debut directly on the Ethereum network, an infrastructure that holds the largest share of tokenized real-world assets.

The Ethereum Institutional initiative confirmed the launch of Open USD, a new stablecoin targeted at the institutional sector and backed by a global consortium of more than 140 companies. The digital asset was designed to operate natively on the Ethereum blockchain from its very first day of activity.

Project development is being led by Open Standard, an independent entity created to manage the token under a decentralized governance model. Unlike traditional models, this structure prevents the concentration of revenue within a single issuer.

Official company data reveals that profits generated by reserve assets will be distributed among ecosystem partners after deducting a management fee. Additionally, participating institutions will be able to issue and burn the token free of charge and without volume caps.

The list of members includes payment, banking, fintech, and crypto infrastructure firms, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, BNY, Coinbase, and Western Union. Sources from Open Standard indicate that the consortium seeks to provide a neutral, equal-access payment infrastructure.

A boost for Ethereum’s infrastructure

The decision to deploy on Ethereum reinforces the network’s position in the corporate finance segment. Currently, this chain hosts the largest portion of the tokenized U.S. Treasury bonds and digitized real-world assets market.

An analysis by Tom Lee indicates that Ethereum‘s adoption by Open USD serves as a validation of the network for the future of the global financial system. Likewise, market projections suggest that the stablecoin could position itself as a relevant competitor to established issuers and developing proposals such as Ripple’s RLUSD.

The proposed economic model alters the yield retention dynamics typical of the sector. Industry data suggests that consolidated issuers have historically retained the yields from their reserves, whereas the new proposal seeks to return that margin to volume distributors.

According to Open Standard‘s bylaws, the board of directors will consist of representatives from the consortium itself. This architecture aims to reduce the risk of dominance by a single commercial player.

The mainnet deployment on Ethereum will allow integration with the settlement infrastructure already operational in the decentralized ecosystem. Representatives from partner companies indicated that participants will be able to process corporate transactions continuously, 24 hours a day.

The consortium is focusing its next steps on the technical implementation phase and on testnet issuance trials scheduled for the coming months.
