Google Builds Crypto Custody Security Platform for Banks

Key Takeaways

  • Google launched an MPC custody platform for banks, with commercial availability targeted for early 2027.
  • Alphabet is using it on Solana and Ethereum as institutions test protection against private-key theft.
  • The bigger shift is Big Tech treating institutional crypto custody as core financial infrastructure.

Google MPC Splits Crypto Keys to Reduce Single-Point Failure

Google is moving deeper into crypto infrastructure, this time by tackling one of institutional investors’ biggest concerns: who controls the keys.

As part of its Digital Assets Symposium in New York on Wednesday, Oct. 28, Google unveiled the Google Multi-Party Compute (MPC). This custody platform distributes cryptographic key shares across separate environments; a bank could keep one share on its own hardware, another in Google Cloud, and another with a different provider.

No single participant holds the complete private key. Transactions can also be checked against institutional policies, including spending limits, approved destinations, and multi-person authorization requirements, before signing.

Banks Are Already Testing Google’s Crypto Infrastructure

The service is in private preview, with commercial availability targeted for early 2027.

“Several major financial institutions are already testing it,” Google said, adding that the system is being developed as private-key theft has cost the crypto industry billions.

Alphabet itself has begun using the technology to secure digital assets on Solana and Ethereum, though Google has not disclosed which assets it holds or identified the institutions participating in testing.

That makes the project more than a theoretical experiment. Google’s parent is already becoming a user of the crypto security infrastructure Google wants to sell to financial institutions.

Private-Key Theft Makes the Timing Significant

The security problem is substantial.

Private-key compromises accounted for 43.8% of cryptocurrency stolen in 2024, the largest single category, according to Chainalysis. Total crypto theft reached about $2.2 billion that year.

MPC reduces that single-point-of-failure risk because enough separate key shares must cooperate to authorize a transaction. Compromising one system should not be enough to reconstruct the key or move the assets.

For banks considering Bitcoin, tokenized securities and other blockchain assets, that addresses a security problem traditional custody systems were not originally built to handle.

Post-Quantum Security Is Already on the Roadmap

Google’s move is also attracting attention because the company is a major quantum-computing developer.

The current MPC product is not a post-quantum solution. Its immediate focus is protecting institutions against compromised credentials and unauthorized transactions. Google has, however, said the architecture could eventually accommodate post-quantum cryptography.

That distinction matters.

The immediate story is not that Google has solved crypto’s quantum problem. It is that one of the world’s largest technology companies now sees institutional digital-asset security as a commercial market worth building for.

As banks move further onchain, the infrastructure protecting their keys is becoming valuable infrastructure itself.
