How Canton Lets Banks Share A Ledger Without Sharing Their Data

Canton Network solves a problem that has kept most banks off public blockchains: it lets multiple institutions record and settle the same transaction on shared infrastructure while each party sees only the portion of that transaction it is actually involved in. This is called sub-transaction privacy, and it is the core reason banks such as JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and DTCC now run live workflows on Canton instead of a private, closed-off ledger.

What Is Sub-Transaction Privacy?

On a public blockchain like Ethereum, every node stores every transaction. That works for open finance but fails for banks, which cannot let competitors see client positions, payroll, or collateral levels. Canton splits each transaction into pieces.

In a delivery-versus-payment trade, for example, the cash provider sees only the payment leg, while the securities provider sees only the asset leg. Nobody outside the deal sees the full picture. Validation still happens through consensus, but only the stakeholders in that specific transaction are responsible for confirming it, a design Canton calls Proof-of-Stakeholder.

How Does The Network Of Networks Actually Work?

Canton is not one ledger. It is a collection of separate applications and bank-run nodes that plug into a shared coordination layer called the Global Synchronizer.

The Global Synchronizer’s Role

The Global Synchronizer orders transactions and coordinates settlement across connected applications, but it never sees the confidential contract data itself. JPMorgan, for instance, keeps its own ledger sovereign while connecting to the London Stock Exchange Group for atomic settlement, without exposing internal data to LSEG or anyone else on the network.

Daml Smart Contracts

The applications run on Daml, a smart contract language built by Digital Asset, the fintech company behind Canton. Daml enforces who can see and act on each part of a contract, which is what makes sub-transaction privacy possible at the code level rather than through permissions layered on top.

Which Institutions Are Live On Canton?

Adoption has moved from pilots to production this year. Current participants include:

  • JPMorgan’s Kinexys unit, integrating its JPM Coin deposit token
  • Goldman Sachs, which built its Digital Asset Platform on Daml
  • DTCC, tokenizing a subset of DTC-custodied U.S. Treasuries, with a broader rollout scheduled for October 2026
  • Visa, which joined in March 2026 as the first payments company to operate a Super Validator, with the network’s Super Validator roster continuing to expand as of August 2026
  • Franklin Templeton, which added its Benji platform in 2025 and became a Super Validator on August 4, 2026
  • HSBC, which completed a tokenized deposit pilot in April 2026

Network activity as of early August 2026 shows roughly 1,200 validator nodes and over 500 million total transactions processed since mainnet launch. Exact Super Validator counts vary between sources during this expansion phase, so we’re not citing a single fixed figure here.

What Is Canton Coin (CC) Tokenomics?

Canton Coin, the network’s native token, launched in July 2024 with no presale or premine. CC pays for network fees and runs on a burn-mint model, meaning issuance ties directly to real usage rather than speculation.

Up to 100 billion CC can be minted over the network’s first ten years, dropping to a fixed 2.5 billion CC per year afterward. As of early August 2026, circulating supply sits near 39 billion CC, and the token traded around $0.09, down sharply from its February 2026 all-time high near $0.19, according to Coingecko data.

Conclusion

Canton Network gives banks a working answer to a problem public blockchains never solved: shared settlement without shared data. Sub-transaction privacy, Proof-of-Stakeholder validation, and the Global Synchronizer together let JPMorgan, DTCC, Visa, and other institutions settle trades atomically across separate ledgers while each keeps its own data private.
