Play to Earn Games to Watch in November

As October comes to an end and the Halloween festivities come to a close, we look ahead at a some games to watch in November. Expect to see more releases and playtests before the end of the year, but here are a few web3 games and game-related companies we’re watching this month — for various reasons!

The web3 gaming market continues to grow, with mobile gaming generating a huge surge in player numbers. But even so, it’s not all about mobile games. There is still a lot of development going on with desktop and web-based games as well.

Here are a few web3 gaming entities that we will be keeping an eye on in the month of November!

Epic Games

Epic Games made a rather surprising announcement recently. The announcement stated that they plan to remove the ability for players to trade Rocket League skins because they want to “align with Epic’s overall approach to game cosmetics and item shop policies, where items aren’t tradable, transferrable, or sellable”.

Now, to be fair, this is a game owned by Epic Games, so they aren’t shutting down a third party marketplace. Nor have they made any statements saying anything negative about web3 gaming or NFTs. However, this is a disconcerting decision, especially with the increasing number of web3 games that are leveraging Epic Games for distribution. But is this a sign of a larger trend in the Epic Games ecosystem, or just a company trying to make sure they control the cash flow for items in their game?

Gods Unchained

Gods Unchained has a new expansion set, a new game mode (Sealed), and has also been in the process of updating their crafting feature (including the ability to craft 1-of-1 variants of legendary cards!). Despite being one of the grandfather games of the web3 space, Gods Unchained still struggles to maintain a significantly large playerbase, with numbers lingering around 5k players per week.

Initial reports from the new expansion are mostly positive, with old-time players finding some new excitement in the game with the additional cards, new game mechanics, and updated god powers. And the ability to play and earn is still very much alive, with Gods Unchained now boasting three different ways to earn – daily play and earn, weekend tournaments, and winning in Sealed mode. So it seems they are in a good position. But will that ever translate to an increased number of players?

Gala Games

Much like Gods Unchained, Gala Games has been around for a long time and is a well known web3 gaming company. They’ve had several official releases this year, including Grit (which seems to be abandoned now), Champions Arena, and Legacy.

Gala Games doesn’t publish player numbers, so we can’t really know for sure how well their games are doing. But just going from general player sentiment and the feel of the games I’ve tried, it seems that even with a growing selection of playable games, the player number for many of Gala’s games are in decline.

Gala Games also has their suite of mobile games which seem to be popular, though they came with an already established playerbase.

Legacy is the newest release and has some buzz around it, but will the game be able to retain current players while bringing in new blood? We shall see!

Sweat Economy

Sweat Economy, a fairly recent entrant into the world of web3 move-to-earn, has had a bit of a launch advantage, being able to leverage their existing userbase, who were already familiar with move to earn through gift cards and other such prizes. Well now Sweat Economy offers a web3 wallet to those who want it, and just recently expanded their scope, opening up their app to Android devices and people in the United States.

Already the top web3 game in terms of active userbase, can Sweat Economy continue to grow and keep their users happy? Or will a greater influx of players wreck havoc on their economy as we have seen with some other move to earn games. I don’t know that this coming month will necessarily give us that answer, but it will be interesting to watch the player trends for Sweat Economy over the coming weeks!
