Supporters of the BIP-110 Fork on Bitcoin Have Mined Their Own Blocks: But There’s a Problem

The minority chain created by BIP-110 supporters on the Bitcoin network has lagged significantly behind the main $BTC chain.

In the divergence that occurred after Bitcoin block 961,632, the Roughnecks mining pool, which supports BIP-110, was only able to produce blocks 961,632 and 961,633. During the same period, the Bitcoin mainchain progressed to block 961,651, surpassing the BIP-110 chain by 18 blocks.

The chain split coincided with the period when Bitcoin mining difficulty was adjusted to 127.48 T. Block production time slowed significantly because the BIP-110 chain, despite having a much lower hash power compared to the main $BTC network, continued to operate with the same mining difficulty.

Matthew Kratter, a supporter of BIP-110, acknowledged that a “very large change” in hash power would be needed for the minority chain to catch up with and surpass the Bitcoin main chain again.

Following these developments, some BIP-110 supporters have begun discussing the option of switching to a different proof-of-work mining algorithm to improve the sustainability of the current chain.

BIP-110 stands out as a controversial proposal aimed at restricting certain transaction and data usage patterns on the Bitcoin network.
