TL;DR

  • Up until now, the Web3 gaming space has been largely dominated by casual play-to-earn gaming titles.

  • …which has lead to the space gaining a pretty bad reputation for being full of lackluster money-grabbing titles.

  • Good news is: Animoca Brands CEO Robby Yeung told us to expect exactly that, in 2024! Why are these kinds of games so important?

  • Currently in Web3 gaming, players often need to buy expensive NFTs to start playing, then grind through hours of gameplay just to make their money back.

  • ‘Buy this game and work your way out of debt’ is not a compelling sales pitch.

  • ‘Buy this game because it’s visually compelling, stupidly fun to play, and just so happens to let you own the in-game digital items you collect’ is.

Back when the iPhone came out, there was a lot of chatter centered around gaming.

Basically, folks were gazing into their crystal balls and predicting that casual mobile gaming was going to take over the gaming industry.

It didn’t.

Sure, mobile gaming was an absolute hit (at least as far as revenue was concerned), but it never replaced triple-a console gaming.

This was for the same reason straight-to-television film making never replaced blockbuster productions:

We (as consumers) love big budget productions!

Up until now, the Web3 gaming space has been largely dominated by casual play-to-earn gaming titles.

…which has lead to the space gaining a pretty bad reputation for being full of lackluster money-grabbing titles.

Thing is, both categories are in desperate need of compelling platforms and titles.

In the gaming space, that means triple-a console-style games.

Good news is:

Animoca Brands CEO Robby Yeung told us to expect exactly that, in 2024!

Ok, but what’s the difference? Why are these kinds of games so important?

It’s all in the hips messaging.

Right now, the selling point of most Web3 games seems to be centered around their blockchain functionality.

Players often need to buy expensive NFTs to start playing, then grind through hours of gameplay just to make their money back.

‘Buy this game and work your way out of debt’ is not a compelling sales pitch.

‘Buy this game because it’s visually compelling, stupidly fun to play, and just so happens to let you own the in-game digital items you collect’ is.

If anyone needs us to play test their upcoming triple-a Web3 gaming titles, slide on in to our DMs.

We dare you.
